Los Angeles-based record company Shout! Factory bought the rights to show the Russian animated series Smeshariki in the US. Sputnik has taken a look at the other Russian cartoons that are beloved around the world.
The flap-eared Cheburashka gets much love from the Japanese audience. The animated film about this odd creature and his friend, Gena the Crocodile, is regularly broadcasted on local TV channels. The iconic Soviet character became very popular in Japan after the series about him was shown in 15 cinemas all over the country and was watched by about 700,000 people between summer 2001 and spring 2002.
Besides Russia, Cheburashka dolls are also produced in Japan and China. United States National Champion figure skater Johnny Weir is known to be an avid collector of Russian Cheburashka memorabilia.
